Winnipeg flourishes with the blossoms come summertime. It’s one of the reasons we endure the cruel winter. Here are ten things to do in Winnipeg this summer (besides buying a house from me, that is).
1. Grand Beach
Not every large city has such a beautiful oasis of white sand and vast blue lake water so close to its concrete jungle of a downtown core. Grand Beach is only an hour drive from the city.
Winnipeg is home to people from all over the world, so come summertime, we like to celebrate that diversity. Folklorama is a two week event in August that gives us the chance to visit various pavilions where we eat, drink, and dance the way people do in other parts of the world.
3. The Bombers and the new Investors Group field
Cheer on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with us! And even if you’re not a football fan, you can still join in on the fun at the new Investors Group field. We just got it!
4. Experience nature and revisit our province’s rich history at FortWhyte Alive.
5. Rainbow Stage
Visit our vibrant outdoor live theatre in Kildonan Park and take in the story of Mary Poppins, which debuts August 9.
6.Winnipeg Fringe Festival
Ah, our crazy neighbours are at it again. Every year, the whole city gets involved in the Fringe Festival, our largest outdoor collection of theatrical performances. Most of the plays are produced by local directors and writers, so it’s a real treat to see the talent that thrives in this city.
7. Paddlewheel River Boat
Head down to Waterfront Drive and board the Paddlewheel River Boat for a romantic evening underneath the moon and stars as you drift down the Red River.
8. Live on the Rooftop
The Winnipeg Art Gallery hosts their “Live on the Rooftop” once in June, again in July, and three times in August. This concert series features local artists from a wide variety of musical genres. Plus, you get to take in all the art hanging on the walls while you’re there.
The Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition features top DJs and electrifying beats from August 15 to 18. You might want to order those glowsticks now.
10. Manito Ahbee
Where marketplace meets trade show, Manito Ahbee connects us with our roots and offers us a wide selection of handmade crafts, clothing, and jewelry from August 16 -21.
Make sure you get out there and enjoy the Winnipeg summer for all it is–but if buying a new home is at the top of your own list, you know where to find us. Happy summer!
